Ishmael Toroama has been returned as President of Bougainville, winning a decisive second term with a clear mandate to continue leading the region towards independence.

Toroama was declared at around 4pm this afternoon at the Hutjena United Church counting centre in Buka by Regional Returning Officer Marcellin Butu, after polling 90,448 first-preference votes, well past the absolute majority of 69,447.

In his victory speech, Toroama thanked Bougainvilleans for their trust and reaffirmed his commitment to steering the independence mission.“The people have spoken. I will continue to pursue independence for Bougainville,” he said.

He also acknowledged the Bougainville Electoral Commission (OBEC) for overcoming challenges to deliver the election, saying the outcome reflected the will of the people.

The declaration was attended by senior leaders including North Bougainville MP Francesca Semoso, Tonsu MP and Attorney General Ezekiel Masatt, and Vice President Patrick Nisira, signalling strong political support behind Toroama’s renewed mandate.

Toroama’s re-election comes at a critical juncture as Bougainville negotiates with the National Government on the timeframe and process for achieving full independence.
