New teachers’ college in Oro province begins expansion

The newly established Modewa Teachers’ College in Oro Province has taken a significant step forward with a groundbreaking ceremony held yesterday for the construction of key infrastructure, including two double-storey lecture rooms and a three-bedroom principal’s residence.
The event was officiated by Northern Governor Gary Juffa and Minister for Education Lucas Dekena, both of whom reaffirmed their commitment to developing the institution into a leading centre for teacher training in Papua New Guinea.
Modewa Teachers’ College, officially endorsed earlier this year as a higher education institution, is a collaborative initiative involving the Oro Provincial Government, Kokoda Track Foundation, Anglican Church of PNG, and other key stakeholders.
Governor Juffa announced a K1 million funding commitment to support the construction of the college’s core infrastructure.
“This investment will cover a double-storey lecture building and a three-bedroom house for the principal,” Governor Juffa said. “This is just the beginning. Our commitment also includes full sponsorship of the first intake of 30 students, who are being entirely funded by the Oro Provincial Government. We will continue to fund all students who attend this institution.”
Education Minister Lucas Dekena also pledged his department’s support, announcing the construction of an additional staff house for Modewa Teachers’ College.
“As this is a new institution with great potential, I want to support Governor Juffa's efforts. The Department of Education will assist by funding the constrction of another staff house on campus,” Minister Dekena said during the ceremony.
In addition, Minister Dekena committed to building two more staff houses; one each for Ijika Primary School and Urio Primary School, further strengthening education infrastructure across the province.
The establishment of Modewa Teachers’ College reflects the province's broader vision to train and retain quality teachers, reduce dependency on external institutions, and provide accessible education opportunities for its youth.
With construction now underway, Modewa Teachers’ College is expected to begin its full academic rollout with improved facilities by next year, marking a significant milestone in the province’s education development agenda.
