Simbu students union celebrates PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary with cultural showcase

The Simbu Students Union of the University of Goroka showcased Papua New Guinea's rich cultural heritage in a vibrant celebration at Dickson's Oval in Kundiawa over the weekend.

Over 200 students displayed traditional costumes and songs from Simbu's six districts, highlighting their unique cultural identities.

The event, "Igniting the Spirit of Our Cultural Heritage," emphasized students' roles in preserving their cultural identity and contributing to their communities.

Union Leader Rudolf Dom stressed that the celebration reminds students of their obligations to fulfill for both males and females in their society.

As part of the celebration, students competed in the Mr. and Mrs. Simbu pageant, debating topics such as mitigating law and order issues and preserving culture for the next 50 years.

Patron Camillus Gagma, principal lawyer of Gagma Lawyers, supported the event despite government financial constraints, highlighting the importance of preserving Simbu's cultural identity and human resource.

He said culture is shaping Simbu's identity and community.

"Culture is the backbone of our society. It influences our values, traditions, and aspirations by preserving and promoting our cultural heritage, we enrich our lives and build a more inclusive future." He said.

The celebration featured traditional cultural costumes, songs, and performances from Simbu's six districts, as well as entertainment by Yaltoms band and oldies, and string band groups.

This event showcases Simbu's rich cultural heritage, emphasizing community obligations, cultural preservation, and human resource development.
