One of the first ever orchestras for the country - Queen of Paradise - from West Sepik Province, left Port Moresby on Thursday, following impressive performances throughout the 50th Independence commemoration.

Twenty-seven young people, ranging in age from 13 to 20, from various villages in the province, have been part of this project, mastering the skills of playing the double bass, violin, and cello since 2018.

NBC News caught up with them, at their final performance at the Catholic Bishops conference before they departed for home:

Conductor, Jesus Briceño from Venezuella, is optimistic about the future of this project:

Sr Virgo Offerens from the Institute of the Incarnate Word, who accompanied them, says, since joining the orchestra, there's been a noticeable change in the young people:

Apart from the main performance of the National Anthem at the Sir John Guise Stadium, they also performed at Vision City, Dynasty Restaurant, and St. Mary's Cathedral during their week-long stay.

The Queen of Paradise orchestra, led by Fr. Miguel De la Calle from the Institute of the Incarnate Word, has over 140 members and is expected to increase by the end of this year, with children as young as 6 eager to join.
