Dominant PNG Lewas launch World Cup Qualifier campaign with convincing win over Japan

The Papua New Guinea Lewas have made a commanding statement in their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific [EAP] Qualifier opener, crushing Japan by 45 runs in Suva today.
Led by player of the match Konio Oala’s blistering half-century and a ruthless bowling display, PNG proved too strong in every department, stamping their authority early in the tournament.
After winning the toss and batting first, PNG piled on a solid 139/4 in 20 overs, with Oala’s 50 off 39 balls setting the tone.
Japan briefly threatened through opener Haruna Iwasaki’s 31 off 17, but PNG’s bowlers quickly regained control.Isabel Toua’s fiery spell of 3/8 ripped through Japan’s middle order, while Geua Tom [2/23], Mairi Tom [1/15] and Pauke Siaka [1/4] tightened the screws. Backed by sharp fielding, including three run outs, the Lewas bundled Japan out for 94 in 19.5 overs, sealing a statement win.
Captain Brenda Tau praised her side’s composure under pressure and their determination to represent PNG with pride.
"For our PNG Lewas, I am very proud of how the team played today, especially our bowlers who kept their composure and executed well," Tau said after the match.
"We are looking forward to our next match and hope to carry our flag and our country high until the qualifiers end.”
The win gives PNG vital momentum as they continue their quest for a coveted spot at the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The Brenda Tau-led side will meet Philippines tomorrow at Albert Park in the second encounter scheduled at 1:30pm.
