Alotau MP honors Grand Chief Somare on Father’s day

Alotau MP Ricky Morris has paid tribute to Papua New Guinea’s founding father, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, during a Father’s Day visit to Vila Viaq in Wewak, East Sepik Province.

Morris was welcomed by the Somare family, Acting Provincial Administrator Alphonse Kami, and members of the Milne Bay community living in Wewak. In a brief ceremony at Sir Michael’s tomb, he laid a wreath and presented a live pig as a traditional token of respect.

“Since today is Father’s Day, the Milne Bay community in Wewak and I wanted to remember our nation’s founding father with this small gesture,” Morris said. “I am here not only as the Member for Alotau, but also representing the people of Milne Bay District.”

He added that the visit formed part of Alotau District’s Independence program, which includes honoring the resting places of key national leaders such as Sir Michael Somare and Sir John Guise.

Before departing Vila Viaq, Morris invited the Somare family to join Alotau in celebrating Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence Anniversary on September 16.
