West Sepik kicks off pre-independence celebrations

West Sepik Province has kicked off its Pre-Independence celebrations with a vibrant float parade showcasing the role of government departments, business houses, and community groups in Papua New Guinea’s development.
The event, staged under the theme “Celebrating Unity and Diversity, Inspiring the Future,” marks the start of a week-long program leading up to the country’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
Acting Deputy Administrator and Chairman of the Provincial Independence Committee, Albert Mutumap, thanked participants for their support. He said Independence should not only be viewed as a time of freedom but also as a reminder of the shared responsibility to contribute to nation-building.
The celebrations will continue throughout the week and conclude with the main Independence festivities on September 17.
