PNG Lewas land in Fiji with high hopes for World Cup qualification

The Papua New Guinea Lewas have touched down in Nadi, Fiji, carrying the hopes of a nation as they prepare to contest the ICC Women’s East Asia-Pacific [EAP] T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
The week-long tournament is a crucial stepping stone for the national cricket team, who are vying for a coveted place at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Captain Brenda Tau said the squad is determined to make an impact after weeks of intensive preparation.
“We are excited and looking forward to the matches. The team has been training well, and we’re ready to give our best for Papua New Guinea,” Tau said upon arrival.
The Lewas, known for their fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude, will begin their campaign against Japan on Tuesday before facing the Philippines [Wednesday] and Samoa [Friday] in the group stages.
The semi-finals are set for Saturday, 13 September, with the final to be played on Monday [15 September].
Cricket Papua New Guinea has called on fans at home and across the Pacific to rally behind the team as Lewas continue to inspire young women and girls through their achievements on the international stage.
As the only Pacific Island nation competing at this level of women’s cricket, the Lewas represent the aspirations of the region. Skipper Tau said the team is ready to showcase their talent and fight for a place on the world stage.
