The Secretary General of the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. António Guterres, will be visiting Wewak, East Sepik Province, and Mt. Hagen, Western Highlands Province this Thursday [04th/09/2025] during his official visit to the country.

He will be accompanied to Wewak by Prime Minister James Marape. They will travel to Kreer Heights to pay their respects at the tomb of the late Grand Chief, Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Thomas Somare, Papua New Guinea's founding father.

After the solemn tribute, both leaders will depart Wewak to Nuku, West Sepik Province and then return back to Wewak in the afternoon to depart to Mount Hagen, Western Highlands Province.

East Sepik Governor Allan Bird in his official social media [fb] welcomed the visit of His Excellency Gurterres for making historical visit to the province.

He urged the people of East Sepik to give the highest respect to Mr. Guterres and Prime Minister James Marape as they arrive, as he will not be in the province.

"Unfortunately, I only received notification this morning and I have already committed a few months ago to attend the 50th Anniversary Independence Celebrations by PNGans in Perth Western Australia.

"Perth has the largest PNG community outside of PNG and a large proportion of them are Sepik people. They are meeting most of the expenses of this trip.

"I will also use the opportunity to visit employers in Western Australia to secure opportunities for our young people to work there." Bird said.

Governor Bird said, Minister for International Trade and Investment Richard Maru, supported by MPs in the province including the Deputy Governor will be welcoming His Excellency.

Meanwhile, in Western Highlands the provincial government is looking foward also to receive the delegation as they arrive.
