The Alekano Zagusave Voice Inc was officially launched on Thursday at the National Park in Goroka, marking a historic step for the 39 Alekano-speaking villages, traditional landowners of Goroka town.

The association aims to unite the Alekano people, giving them a collective voice on matters affecting the town’s development, equitable benefits for customary landowners, and representation in leadership positions.

The launch was witnessed by Eastern Highlands Governor Simon Sia, village elders, business leaders, and prominent professionals. Governor Sia commended the initiative, stating that the association would help restore Goroka to its glory days and promised collaboration on future development projects.

“This is a positive step forward, and I will work with Alekano Zagusave Voice Inc on initiatives that benefit the community,” Governor Sia said.

Chairman Sydney Walizopa said it took four years to establish the association with the goal of creating a foundation for future generations to benefit from Goroka’s development.

“Much of the land was given out by the Gahuku tribes for the development of Goroka town years ago. The Alekano Zagusave Voice Inc will serve as an umbrella for other ILG associations, providing a political voice for people who have been left out,” Mr Walizopa said.

Deputy Chairman and Senior Statesman Aho Baliki said the association is not a political group, but a collective voice for landowners to address pressing issues affecting their progress.

“For the first time, we are uniting as one Alekano team. We want Alekano people to take ownership and be partners with local and provincial governments, as well as political leaders, to develop Goroka town,” Mr Baliki said.

The establishment of Alekano Zagusave Voice Inc is seen as a major milestone for landowner unity, ensuring that the Alekano people have a say in the ongoing growth and governance of Goroka.
