Deteriorating Mt Wiri section of the Mendi Kandep road to be upgraded

The Mt Wiri stretch of the Mendi-Kandep Highway, which has been a growing concern for the travelling public, is set to undergo major rehabilitation works soon.
This assurance was given by Mendi Munihu MP, Raphael Tonpi, in response to mounting public outcry over the deteriorating condition of the road.
The Mt Wiri section serves as a vital link between Kandep in Enga Province and the Hela Province, making it a vital route for transportation, trade, and access to services.
Tonpi acknowledged the frustrations of the travelling public and has expressed regret over the delay in addressing the issue.
“We sincerely apologize for not responding to this matter sooner,” Tonpi stated. “However, I can confirm that the Department of Works and Highways has now engaged a local contractor to carry out the necessary upgrades. Work is expected to commence shortly,” he said.
MP Tonpi, who also serves as the Vice Minister for State Owned Enterprises further revealed that several portions of the road had suffered extensive damage during the devastating 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the Highlands Provinces in 2018.
These sections of the road have not been fixed since then and has been a safety risk for the moving public.
