What began as a village celebration for PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary has turned into a bold push to transform Karekodobu from a subsistence-farming community into a hub for commercial agriculture and agro-tourism.

The village today hosted its first-ever Mini Agriculture Show, a grassroots initiative led by local resident and Department of Agriculture and Livestock [DAL] policy analyst Goru Babona, attracting about 1,000 people, including DAL Secretary Dr Sergie Bang, government officials, schools, and development partners.

The one-day event featured climate-smart farming demonstrations, integrated agriculture systems, crop displays, the launch of the Karekodobu Iadaga Association and piggery project, and a graduation ceremony for farmers trained in climate-resilient practices.

Babona said the initiative is designed to align with the government’s National Agriculture Sector Plan 2024–2033 and inspire farmers to make the leap from subsistence to commercial production.

“This is a grassroots-driven initiative showing how communities can take ownership of agricultural development while aligning with national policy,” Babona said.
“Our goal is to motivate farmers, attract government support, and partner with organisations to commercialise farming in Karekodobu.”

Dr Bang said the event marks the start of an economic journey that blends farming with cultural heritage.

“It’s the beginning of agro-tourism for this district,” he said. “We can build this into an annual eco-tourism attraction, combining agriculture, markets, and traditional dances to boost local income and trade.”

The show held at the Karekodobu soccer field, was funded by the committee with community contributions. Dr. Bang said DAL will work with the Tourism Promotion Authority to develop the event into a signature agro-tourism showcase for Central Province.
