Lady Veronica Somare, wife of Papua New Guinea’s founding father, the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, was visibly emotional as she arrived at the National Parliament precinct for the unveiling of her husband’s life-size monument.

As she waved to the crowd gathered to witness the historic occasion, Lady Veronica was overcome with emotion and broke down in tears.

She received a special welcome from Prime Minister James Marape and was respectfully ushered to her seat by Members of Parliament and dignitaries in attendance.

Lady Veronica stood by her husband through decades of nation-building and played a significant role alongside him during Papua New Guinea’s journey to independence.

She was accompanied by her son, Arthur Somare, daughter Dulciana, and other members of the Somare family.
