Papua New Guinea will make medical history this week with its first-ever kidney transplant, following the arrival of a team of transplant specialists from the United Kingdom.

The announcement was made this morning by the Chairman of the Kidney Transplant Program and the country’s Chief Surgeon, Dr. Hoxxen Okti Poki, who confirmed that the visiting UK team arrived yesterday to begin preparations.

"They have traveled the world in many third world countries and helped establish kidney transplant programs like ours for many, many years, and we have that team behind us, and today, as I speak to you, the team is in the country," Dr Poki said.

The team consists of nine specialists, including women, with a tenth member expected to arrive Thursday. Their mission is to carry out the country's first kidney transplant surgery at Port Moresby General Hospital before the end of the week.

Dr. Poki acknowledged the significant support from the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) and other partners, saying this milestone is the result of three years of dedication and groundwork.

The journey began at Port Moresby General Hospital under the leadership of chief executive officer Dr. Paki Molumi, with the backing of the hospital board and government.

He added that the team has reached a critical point in the program.

"We are at the point of no return. This is going to happen this week. I believe we are ready to deliver this much-needed service. Our people need it and if we don’t do it now, who will? If not today, then when?”

Health Minister Elias Kapavore praised the initiative, calling it a breakthrough in the country’s health sector, and expressed full support for the upcoming transplant.
