Settlers of Bushwara settlement in Port Moresby affected by the recent eviction carried out on portions 2156, 2157 and 2159 will soon be relocated to two new locations.

This relocation exercise comes under the National Government’s Settlement to Suburb policy, facilitated by the Moresby Northeast District and the National Capital District Commission.

Moresby Northeast MP, John Kaupa when visiting the affected settlers at portion 2159 told them that the Moresby Northeast administration and NCDC have identified two land portions at 14-Mile and Pari for the resettlement program.

Mr Kaupa says a surveyor has been engaged to do the survey and allocate sub-divisions and allotments for the settlers to acquire and settle permanently with proper land titles.

The MP also clarified that each block holder will be handed the land title after the total of K20,000 is completed over time.

Mr Kaupa was accompanied by two prominent business houses in the Northeast District, J-Mart and Eliseo who donated K50,000 worth of basic food items and toiletries.

The Moresby Northeast MP has also called on State entities and employers to provide accommodation for their hardworking employees as part of their employment conditions.

Mr Kaupa was responding to a question asked by NBC newsroom regarding the government’s plans to alleviate the housing issue in the city for public servants and citizens who are genuinely looking for land and housing.

He stressed that housing is a common need for all city dwellers and the onus is on employers to ensure their employees are well accommodated.

He added that he stands ready to assist those individuals who are genuinely looking to settle in the city through the settlement to suburb program arrangement.

The Member for Hiri-Koiari Keith Iduhu has on the other hand cautioned the government not to give false hope to the evicted illegal settlers.

He said this, in light of Prime Minister James Marape announcement that he has instructed Lands Minister John Rosso, Moresby Northeast MP John Kaupa and NCD Governor Powes Parkop to look at solutions for the settlers.

In a statement, Mr Iduhu said Hiri-Koiari and Central Province continues to be subjected to the encroachment and expansion of Port Moresby and the spillover of illegal settlers.

The Member concurred with Central Provincial Member Rufina Peter's statement on a zero tolerance stance against illegal settlers.

The Hiri Koiari MP says while he sympathizes with the hardship being faced by those evicted, the onus is now on the government to apply proper land and housing policy to this situation and not dish out promises.

Furthermore, Mr Iduhu has also urged his people not to cheaply and illegally give away land in the hope of getting quick money.
