The South Fly District Disaster Office has started the distribution of relief supplies to approximately 11,257 households impacted by the flooding in the area.

Joy Iwaneke, the District Disaster Risk Management Coordinator, says the relief items being distributed mainly consist of rice, flour, oil, and noodles to the four rural LLGs within the South Fly District.

She added that the distribution of food supplies to Fore coast and Fly Kiwai LLG has been completed, with similar efforts now underway for Morehead and Oriomu-Bituri LLG.

Ms Iwaneke also highlighted that [Department of Foreign Affairs] DFAT, through an Australian partnership program, is supporting the logistics for the distribution of food supplies in the district.

Currently, the DFAT barge is delivering food supplies to Central Morehead, Bensbach, and Weam for Morehead LLG.

On Friday, another barge is scheduled to transport food supplies for the Wipim community along the Oriomu River.

Following this, the same canal boat will carry food up the Fly River, to deliver supplies at Tapila for the Bituri and East Trans Fly community, and then proceed to Suki.

By the weekend, all food distribution to the flood-affected communities is expected to be completed.
