The Nebilyer Section of the Highlands Highway leading to Southern Highlands and Hela provinces has been washed away due to continuous heavy rain, making it inaccessible for heavy trucks to pass through.

Exxon Mobil and LNG Projects workers at Moro and the general public could not access the road either.

The affected road is in Malda, lower Nebilyer in Tambul Nebilyer district, Western Highlands.

Workers from the Department of Works and Highways got to work immediately to restore the road as security personnel comprising police and PNG Defence Force stood guard to avoid any disturbances by the nearby communities.

The community leaders and their people have been commended by police for maintaining peace and being cooperative with the Department of Works in reaching an understanding to allow repair work to progress.

People living in this area depend entirely on this highway as an economic lifeline for Southern Highlands, Hela and Kikori in Gulf Province.
