UPNG commemorate World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day was commemorated at UPNG today with the theme ‘A Press for the planet; Journalism is the face of environmental crisis’.
Those attending the event included Minister for Information and Communication Technology Timothy Masiu, NBC Managing Director Kora Nou and others celebrated the brave reporters, photographers, and media workers who encounter challenges and fought diligently in disseminating information.
Minister Masiu said the power of press to inform, educate and mobilize communities towards sustainable solutions cannot be overstated.
He encourages students to know the background information before reporting on climate change and other environmental areas as well.
"There is no doubt, the globe is experiencing an environmental crisis in the effects of climate change...it is real and we can feel it.
"Our islands are sinking, sea level is rising affecting food gardens, environment and homes.
"There has been not much reporting and we need good in-depth reporting," Masiu said.
Journalists coming out from university and mainstream media journalists were encouraged to get the facts on the ground, on effect of climate changes on people.
Masiu also challenged the institution to upgrade their program to meet the current trend world is moving so together they can harness the full potential of Journalism.
