10 students from the Hiri West in Central province were provided necessary tuition fee support from NiuPower under its inaugural scholarship program.

At the inauguration of the scholarship program last week, NiuPower paid K180,000 in tuition and boarding fees to the Port Moresby Technical College and other suppliers for the ten scholarship recipients.

Additional support including essential boarding basics such as mattresses, stationery, and boarding starter kits were also provided.

Liaison officer Bisia Geita highlighted that NiuPower is adamant that education is the key to unlocking a brighter future for the youths.

The energy company is optimistic of creating opportunities and investing in education and paving the way forward for communities in the Hiri West region.

Lohia Oda, a recipient of the scholarship, said the assistance by NiuPower would enable the students to pursue their goals and have a positive impact in their lives.

“On behalf of my fellow colleagues, I would like to express our gratitude to NiuPower CEO Michael Uiari and scholarship committees for your generosity in sponsoring our tuition and boarding fees,” Oda from Papa village said.

“It’s an honor to have you [NiuPower] as our sponsor and we’re grateful for your support. Your willingness to invest in our education will make a significant impact in our lives.

“It has allowed us to pursue our academic goals with confidence and has given us the opportunity to focus on our studies without worrying about the financial burden of tuition fees.”

As part of NiuPower’s commitment to education in the Hiri West project impact areas, an opportunity was given to two scholarship recipients, a male and a female from Porebada, Boera, Papa, Lealea, and Kido villages respectively for full scholarships at Pomtech.

The 10 students will pursue the national certificate 1 & 2 in their chosen trade.

Through this scholarship program, NiuPower intend to see an increase of female participation in trades and in technical schools in the next intake.

Meanwhile, NiuPower also opened a new library for Lealea primary school last Friday [March 1], marking another milestone in its commitment to the education sector.

This is the second project under the Community Investment Program after the success of the Kido Primary School Library.

The newly built facility stocked with a diverse range of reading materials for all primary school-aged students, is fenced, equipped with 4 water tanks [9000 liter], WASH basins, solar lighting, and fans, ensuring a self-sustaining and comfortable learning environment.
