The National Capital District Commission [NCDC] has issued an order for the closure of the public market in the Gerehu Suburb of Port Moresby's North-West Electorate.

The closure notice, which comes into effect today, is a result of arson to the chain of supermarkets opposite the market following the public looting on 10th January.

City Manager Frank Ravu said “the aftermath has given rise to a deplorable state characterized by a pervasive stench, infestation of maggots, and the onset of various public health issues.

“Consequently, in the interest of preventing any unforeseen health-related tragedies and in compliance with Chapter 226 of the Public Health Regulations, I hereby instruct that the Gerehu Market be closed until further notice.”

Mr Ravu said garden foods stored inside the market “area have been condemned due to their exposure to the toxic and unsanitary environment resulting from the recent events.

The condemned food products have been stopped from being sold to the public.

“This condemnation and closure action is deemed necessary until such a time as the above-mentioned issues are thoroughly addressed and rectified to the satisfaction of the city authority.” Mr Ravu said
