Two dead after attempts to break into shops in Lae

Following intelligence reports, combined joint security personnel in the country’s second largest city were on guard early this morning to prevent break and enter of shops.

Reports from NBC Morobe state two people were killed when a crowd of opportunists attempted to loot shops and businesses houses in the provincial capital.

The two deaths were at Lae's 7th Street and Polytechnical Institute area.

Police with the support of Correctional Services and PNG Defense Force soldiers are patrolling the streets deterring people from a repeat of Port Moresby lawlessness on Wednesday.

All business houses and banks in Lae are closed after opportunists stoned and attempted to loot shops at Eriku, Top Town, Malahang Industrial and the main market areas.

Meanwhile, in the provincial capital of East Sepik its business as usual in Wewak.

Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Superintendent Christopher Tamari assured business houses in the province that normal police operations will continue despite the protest by their counterparts in the nation’s capital.

PPC Tamari responding to East Sepik Chamber of Commerce President Berry Lemot said everything will be normal in the province as police are still active in normal operations.
