Six police detained over alleged murder of Hela administrator’s son outside Gordon police station
Detectives from the Port Moresby Criminal Investigative Division Homicide Unit have detained six police personnel and a civilian informant linked to the alleged murder of a teenager last Monday.
NCD & Central Commander Anthony Wagambie Junior said the suspects were apprehended and brought in for questioning last Friday.
The suspects are linked to the death of the son of the Hela provincial administrator, whose body was found in a drain next to the Gordon police station last week.
According to a statement released by the police commanders for NCD and Central Province, the seven suspects are in police custody while Boroko homicide detectives carry out investigations, including a post mortem on the body to identify the cause of death.
The six police officers were on routine patrol last week when they came across youths allegedly drinking on a red double cab ute.
The youths were escorted by the police to Gordon police station, where the teenager and three others jumped off the ute's trailer out of fear.
Two of the youths were caught while the body of the deceased young man was only discovered in a drain across from the police station the next morning.
Commander Wagambie Junior said police were working closely with relatives of the dead man.
He warned any individuals or groups in the city not to use the situation to issue threats against police and their families.
He also said police would deal with anyone posting fake news on social media and causing fear in the nation's capital.
