By-Election nomination ends on Thursday

The seven days’ candidates’ nomination for vacant parliamentary seats of Maprik Open in East Sepik and Sohe Open in Oro, closes this Thursday. 

Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai said a shorter election period was because of the national population census in June and local level government elections in July.  

Mr Sinai appealed to all intending candidates and their supporters to respect the electoral process and assist his field officers perform their legal duties.

Intending candidates’ nomination period will be for seven days [25th April – 02nd May 2024], four weeks of campaign [25th April – 24th May 2024], five days polling [25th May – 29th May 2024] and 21 days of counting [29th May – 18th June 2024].

Writs to be returned to the office of the Governor General before Tuesday 18th June, 2024.

The Maprik Open seat was left vacant following the death of sitting MP Gabriel Kapris last year.

And the people of Sohe Electorate were without a member of parliament after the courts of disputed return ruled 2022 election of Henry Amuli null and void.
