Papua New Guinea athletics sensation Adrine Monagi stamped a new record for PNG in the 100m hurdles with a remarkable time of 13.46 seconds.

Smashing her own personal best of 13.71 sec, Monagi was able to beat the previous national record of 13.52secs, which was set by Sharon Kwarula preceding to the 2015 Pacific Games in United States.

The new record was the highlight of the weekend for PNG at the Australian National Championships in Adelaide, where Monagi was outstanding in the hurdles race.

Meanwhile other athletes who also participated in the event in Australia include Pais Wisil who successfully navigated round one in the 100m and in the preliminary finals.

Wisil established a personal best 10.61secs in the semifinal and looked very good throughout being explosive out of the blocks.

In Long Jump, Rellie Kaputin just missed out on the final after her last effort which was thought to be well over 6 metres, was ruled a foul by the tiniest of margins.

Though disappointed, Rellie is happy to be free of injury and is now focused on the Oceania Championships.

Throwing over to Javelin, Sharon Toako threw seasons best 44.75m while Scholastica Herman’s results were a reflection of her training in Lae which was more suited to her 1500m and will do more speed work to improve her lactic tolerance for the 800m.

William Peka [400m hurdles], Herman and Aquila Turalom [3000m steeplechase] all competed well and have gained valuable competition experience in Australia since the Pacific Games.

PNG athletics president Tony Green said he was satisfied with the overall results and thanked sponsors Kumul Mineral Holdings, PNG Air and Team PNG Sponsor, Kumul Consolidated Holdings for their support.
