Killing two birds with one stone perfectly matches young Robert's achievement.

PNG SP Hunters back rower and upcoming star Robert Mathias achieved dual success in education and sports within a month’s interval.

Last month he was recruited as Hunters #127 and turning 23, days before he would walk up the podium to receive his Bachelor of Accounting during graduation at the University of Technology seemed coincidental.

Mathias said his achievement in education is a testimony of his personal commitment and that of his parents but achievement in sports was purely passion driven based on his confidence and potential he had.

“Because I come from a Christian family my family encouraged me to concentrate on my studies, but I knew I had a potential to play, and I tried. I am so grateful that Lae Snax Tigers identified my potential and gave me the chance.

“Tigers also assisted me with my school fees and that was a relief for my parents, and they were happy and released me to identify my potential. Yes, it was very challenging concentrating on two things, but it taught me how to manage my time and remain focused on what I believe,” Mathias said.

The young Western Highlander, played for the same position PNG internationals Justin Olam and Roderick Tai played back in the UniTech Rugby League Club, UniTech Spartans.

"Roderick is my big brother I look up to, he always encouraged me how to play and I am greatful,” Mathias said.

Now the question his family, tribesmen and even his fans nationwide have is whether he will pursue a career with the qualification he has attained or follow in the footsteps of Olam and Tai.

“I will put on hold my accountancy degree and pursue in Rugby. I know my strength is also in rugby leage and I want to give more years and see if I can make,” Mathias clarified.

Mathias proved himself in his second appearance with the Hunters as player of the week with 186 run meters, 9 carries, 4 tackle breaks, 3-line breaks and scored first try.
