Thousands of villagers in Angoram District, East Sepik Province have been displaced by flooding following continuous rainfall over past weeks that have caused major tributaries to overflow onto low lying villages.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird visited the affected areas yesterday and immediately committed K200,000 in emergency funding to assist affected villagers.
Disaster officials from the East Sepik Provincial Administration are now preparing to conduct damage assessments.
Local rice farmer Wesley Piso told NBC News from Angoram that major rivers including Yuat, Karawari and other smaller tributaries leading to the main Sepik River burst their banks causing widespread damage to homes, food gardens and water sources.
All five local level government areas in the Angoram District are reported to have been affected by the flood.
