Special reference on the Integrity Law uncertain
Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:00pm
The Supreme Court has summoned the Fly River Provincial Government to
appear in court this week in relation to the special reference on the
Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates.
This comes as the lawyer representing the Provincial Government who
are the Referrers' in the special constitutional reference, filed a
notice to cease acting for the provincial government.
Denyse Ray reports, uncertainty now looms over the continuation of
the special reference challenging the validity of the Integrity law in
court.
This follows the withdrawal of legal services by counsel for the Fly
River provincial government Ben Lomai.
Mr Lomai has advised the court that he is no longer representing the
provincial government.
As a result Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia raised the issue of
whether the Fly River provincial government is still interested in
pursuing the matter as it is the second lawyer who has ceased to act
for them.
Justice Sir Salamo then directed that the Provincial government
appear in court this week and advise the court whether they are still
interested in pursuing the reference.
Parties are expected to return to court this Thursday.
