Madang Governor threatens to sue logging operators

Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:00pm

Madang Governor Sir Arnold Amet is threatening court action to stop all logging operations in the Ramu Block 1 Forest Management Area, if relevant authorities fail to produce necessary documents in relation to the project.

The threat was issued by Sir Arnold during a briefing between the National Forest Authority Managing Director Kanawi Pouru and the developer- Timbers PNG.

Following separate Power Point presentations by NFA and Timbers PNG, a subsidiary of logging giant Rimbunan Hijau, Sir Arnold said the information both entities had supplied was not only what he described as "wishy washy" but very shallow.

He said, the information could not be used by him as the head of the province to have a meaningful dialogue with them.

He says, as it was the people including the leaders of the province were in the dark and for them to turn up at the meeting without any form of documentation besides their power point presentation, was unacceptable.

He demanded copies of all relevant documents including the contractual agreements be furnished without any delay.
