Largest PNG-Australia military exercise underway

Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:00pm

The largest bilateral military exercise between the Defence Forces of Papua New Guinea and Australia, is underway.

The Australian Defence Force's HMAS Kanimbla sailed into Port Moresby's Fairfax Harbor, with several hundred military personnel from Australia, and 12 PNG Defence Force personnel.

The military ship will act as a platform for the exercise, which will involve land, air and sea operations.

The ship will sail to Morobe Province, to support personnel on high altitude Hilicon Luk training, and return to Port Moresby for a combined arms training at Bootless Bay.

The exercise code-named 'Olgeta Warrior' begun last month, with the 3rd Combat Engineering Regiment from Australia and engineers from the PNGDF.

The engineers are carrying out re-construction and maintenance work at the Goldie River Training Depot, outside Port Moresby.
