Gas turbines at Hides turned on again

Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:00pm

Gas turbines at the Hides Gas Project in the Komo District of the new Hela Province are back in operation.

This follows compensation demands by landowners forcing the shutdown of the Hides Gas project.

Provincial Police Commander Superintendent, Jimmy Onopia who travelled to the project site on Friday said the turbines were back in operation on Saturday, supplying gas generated electricity to the huge Porgera Gold Mine in the Enga province after talks were held with the landowners..

Joe Kerema reports from Mendi, the landowners shutdown the gas turbine generating electricity demanding K500m from the Department of Petroleum and Energy and Oil Search.

The landowners from Pina Village outside the Hides Petroleum Development License Area, had alleged that they have not been compensated in any form, by Oil Search and the Department of Petroleum and Energy, for the past 19 years, since the electricity and processing plants were established.

They are demanding K500m illegal occupation and use of the Pina Clan Customary land outside the PDL-1 License Area.
