Civil society group challenges ban on protest march

Tue Aug 25, 2009 12:00pm

Civil Society group, Voices for Justice and Governance have filed a case challenging the ban issued by Police Commissioner Gari Baki for their planned protest march.

The march in support of the new Resource Ownership Bill was scheduled to take place a fortnight ago, was put off after Mr Baki disallowed the march for fear of opportunists taking advantage of the march.

Tame Lawyers representing the applicants, Voices for Justice and Governance Chairman, Jonathan Oata and NGOs and Civil Society Coalition Parties Chairman, Noel Anjo filed the application last Friday.

The Police Commissioner is among those who have been named as defendants.

The application is seeking to have the proposed march to be later staged in November this year.
