SMEC engineers arrive in Oro

Mon Apr 20, 2009 12:00pm

A team of Geotech Engineers from the Snowy Mountain Engineers Corporation or SMEC in Australia, is in the province inspecting four bridges destroyed during the 2007 Cyclone Guba.

The four bridges are the Double Cross, Erovo, Girua and Kumusi.

Surveyors from Arman Larma would also be surveying the four bridges.

The bridges have not been repaired and people are still using the wet crossing, which are continuously being destroyed by flood.

Recently, the people of Kokoda held a protest march, threatening to shutdown the Kokoda Highway, which would have affected major business houses in the area - like the Higaturu Oil Palm project.

The Highway is also important, as it connects the infamous world war two trail - the Kokoda Track.

Thousands of tourist, especially, Australians visit the track every year.
