People threaten to shut down Wewak wharf project

Tue Nov 18, 2008 4:00pm

Landowners of the Wewak wharf extension area, are threatening to close down the K37-million project.

They said the project may put to jeopardy, if relevant authorities continue to ignore landowner participation, in major discussions and other contract jobs.

Francis Kuruf'her, who is Chairman of the landowner company known as Kreer Development Corporation (KDC), said PNG Ports Corporation and the East Sepik Provincial Government, have not honored the agreement they signed with the landowners, on the 29th of October 1984 and reviewed in 1994.

Mr Kuruf'her said the agreement stated, that both PNG Ports Corporation and the East Sepik Government, assist in setting up the local company and to negotiate, for the sale of its 20 percent share of the project.

He said the agreement also highlighted, they assist KDC by making representation for financial assistance to appropriate authorities of the State, in its bid to acquire the said 20-percent equity in the local stevedoring company.

Mr Kuruf'her further added, the landowners have sought legal advice to pursue the matter in Court.
