Kaona denies takeover bid

Former leader of the so called Bougainville Revolutionary Army, Sam
Kaona has denied media reports that warned of his possible takeover of
the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG).
He denied the claim made by one of the daily newspapers in Papua New
Guinea (PNG).
Mr Kauona explained that the ABG is the people's government and the
people expect it to uphold their aspirations for political, social and
economic change.
In light of the coming presidential by-election, Mr Kauona said he
will closely monitor leaders contesting the by-election to ensure that
the people do not elect a leader who opposes the political and
economic foundation laid down by the late President Joseph Kabui.
He said former combatants will continue to support the ABG to
implement the Bougainville peace agreement, autonomy and referendum
for independence.
He said this is the foundation that the late President Kabui stood on
to initiate new policies.
Mr Kaona said also that PNG should allow the ABG to fully emphasis
its powers and functions under its constitution in order to test the
new political arrangement.
He said these policies can be amended if they fail to accommodate the
wishes of the people. |
