Nuku District in Sandaun province has become the first in the country
to effectively put to use its share of the District Support
Improvement Program grant.
Within its first two weeks of release, Nuku has used K3m of its K4m
allocation to solicit an extra K3m from AusAID for the rehabilitation
of a 65km road network linking Wewak, the provincial capital of
neighboring East Sepik province.
The Member for Nuku and Minister for Housing, Andrew Kumbakor
presented the counterpart funding to AusAID at Parliament House
yesterday to ensure the realization of the road project.
The gesture by Nuku now throws out a challenge to other districts in
the country through their parliamentary representatives to do likewise.
The occasion also proves wrong, at least from one district,
criticisms that such funds can be subject to abuse.
Meanwhile Minister Kumbakor is urging his colleague members to seek
available support from overseas donors, using their District Support
Improvement Program funds as counterpart source. |
