Agency reports cases of school girls pregnancies

Thur Jul 31, 2008 4:00pm

A local non government agency has reported that over 30 primary school girls were pregnant in South Bougainville over the last five years.

President of the Leitana Women's Development Agency, Helen Hakena said this was reported by a headmaster from one of the schools in Bana District this week.

Mrs Hakena said the report stated that many of the girls were raped and this is a shock in Bougainville.

She also said that this week, a mother with her 8 children from the Solos area in Buka reported her husband for incest.

She said the father had forcefully had sex with his 8 children over the last 10 years until now.

Leitana Women's Development Agency has been working very closely with the police on this case

The agency has records of incest reports from the same area as a result of families living in the bush in isolation from the main villages.
