Parliament No Show - disgraceful act: PNGTUC
Wed Jul 16, 2008 4:00pm
The Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress, has raised concern over
the non-attendance of most leaders, during yesterday's Parliament
session.
Parliament had adjourned for the second time, following the lack of
quorum by Members.
General Secretary of the Union, John Paska, said this action by the
leaders amounted to a disgraceful act of sabotage of parliamentary
democracy, and a betrayal of the people's trust. Mr. Paska said adjournment of Parliament sessions was becoming more
frequent and parliamentarians should stand by their sworn
responsibilities and debate issues in the interests of the people and
the nation.
He said it was very disgraceful to see Parliamentarians asking for a
wage increase in this inexplicable display of leadership failure, yet
ordinary workers are punished when they don't show up for work.
He said the same rules must apply.
Mr. Paska, who was in Parliament yesterday, said the nation has been
echoing its concern over the high cost of living, yet leaders saw fit
not to do anything about it.
He said this was completely unacceptable and urged the leaders to get
their acts in order. |
