Papua New Guinea has reached another milestone, launching its first
ever comprehensive report on the AIDS situation in the country.
The 2008 Country Progress report was presented to the United Nations
General Assembly's Special Session on HIV and AIDS, UNGASS, making PNG
one of the 147 countries that submitted on time for international
assessment.
The report, which covers the period January 2006 to December 2007,
was launched in the country last night.
And for the first time, it uses more than half of the 24 core
indicators set down by UNGASS.
Apart from highlighting the HIV and AIDS situation in PNG, the report
importantly looks at how the country has progressed in addressing what
is now a generalized epidemic.
The National AIDS Council Secretariat compiled the report towards the
end of 2007, and sent it to Geneva, Switzerland on the 31st of January
this year. |
